MCP servers
MCP servers
RobOS exposes tasks, the knowledge graph, workspaces, CI, the IDE and the desktop to coding agents through Model Context Protocol servers. This page is the API contract for each one. The same data, in the shape tools/list and resources/list return, is in docs/mcp/tools.json.

60 tools in all. Every server reports MCP protocol version 2024-11-05.
Connect an agent
Agents connect to one stdio server, the router in packages/robos-mcp-router. It merges the tools of every RobOS server registered in ~/.config/robos/mcp/servers.json and forwards each tools/call to the server that owns the tool.
Claude Code (.mcp.json or ~/.claude.json), and the same mcpServers block for other agents that read it:
{
"mcpServers": {
"robos": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/path/to/robos/packages/robos-mcp-router/cli.js", "--stdio"]
}
}
}
On the appliance VM the router is installed at /usr/local/share/robos/robos-mcp-router/cli.js. node packages/robos-mcp-router/cli.js --claude-config prints that block, and packages/claude-autoconfig writes it for Claude Code.
Codex (~/.codex/config.toml):
[mcp_servers.robos]
command = "node"
args = ["/path/to/robos/packages/robos-mcp-router/cli.js", "--stdio"]
Start a server
Each package exports a factory from server.js. Given a port, the server listens on HTTP and records its endpoint in the registry, so the router can forward calls to it:
node -e "require('./packages/task-manager-mcp/server').createTaskMCPServer({ port: 7311 })"
Without a port (the default when the server’s desktop app starts it) the server only registers its tool names. The router then answers tools/list with those names and runs a small built-in set of task and graph tools in-process; other calls need the server running with a port.
Protocol
JSON-RPC 2.0. The router speaks it over stdio, one JSON message per line. A server started with a port speaks it over HTTP.
| Method | Result |
|---|---|
initialize |
protocolVersion, serverInfo (name, version) and capabilities (tools, resources) |
ping |
{} |
tools/list |
{ tools: [{ name, description, inputSchema }] } |
tools/call |
params: { name, arguments }. Returns { content: [{ type: "text", text }] }, where text is the handler’s result (JSON for objects). A handler error returns isError: true. |
resources/list |
{ resources: [{ uri, name, mimeType, description }] } |
resources/read |
params: { uri }. Returns { contents: [{ uri, mimeType, text }] } |
HTTP endpoints of a server started with a port:
| Endpoint | Purpose |
|---|---|
POST /mcp |
One JSON-RPC request in the body, one response back |
GET /health |
{ ok, appId, name, version, tools, resources } |
Tool names are robos_<area>_<action>; a tool defined without the robos_ prefix is renamed robos_<appId>_<name>. Resource URIs are robos://<appId>/<path>. Both rules are in packages/robos-mcp-lib/server.js.
Example
printf '%s\n' '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/list"}' | node packages/robos-mcp-router/cli.js
curl -s localhost:7311/mcp -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
-d '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"tools/call","params":{"name":"robos_tasks_list","arguments":{"status":"IN_PROGRESS"}}}'
Write a server
Build it on packages/robos-mcp-lib, the same way the servers below are built:
const { createMCPServer } = require('../robos-mcp-lib');
function createMyMCPServer(options = {}) {
const server = createMCPServer({
appId: 'my-app',
name: 'My App MCP Server',
version: '1.0.0',
port: options.port || null,
tools: [{
name: 'robos_myapp_list',
description: 'List items.',
inputSchema: { type: 'object', properties: { query: { type: 'string' } } },
handler: async (args) => listItems(args.query),
}],
resources: [{ uri: 'items', name: 'Items', handler: async () => listItems() }],
});
return { server };
}
Then add it to SERVERS in scripts/generate-mcp-docs.js and regenerate this page. Tests for the servers are in packages/robos-test/tests/mcp-servers/.
